My main reason for choosing King's College London was the fact that it is one of the most prestigious and highest ranked university in the world. Also, it was an opportunity to explore a new city, culture and to develope in English. Therefore, London was an attractive choice. Lastly the UK is close to home and was part of the EU meaning very little paperwork was required. There was not much of a preparation beforehand, except for the application for an accomodation which was provided by King's College.
Ankomst och registrering
This was a bit tricky for us biomedical students, since all students that were supposed to leave for exchange studies had to leave two weeks before courses end. Therefore, we had to inform our course coordinators at the beginning of the course to finish the last assignments before the leave or abroad.
Thankfully, we had the exam before christmas break, and therefore the exam did not have to written abroad.
This was a relief since the week before the move and the first week in your new city is a bit stressy.
I would recommend to move a couple of days before the start of the project in order to fix accommodation, and get to know and find in the city.
Also, I would recommend to look at the schools student union, where you can find societies and teams you could join which is a great way to meet new people.
Ekonomi
London is probably one of the most expensive cities in the world, and it's mainly because of accommodation and travel expenses. Expect the rent to be at least twice as high as an accommodation of the same size in Stockholm.
Some would also recommend to apply for a student discounted oyster card, since many believe that it will reduce the costs of travel. However, pay as you go costs are not discounted. To recieve a discount, one has to buy monthly travel card which you could choose which "zones" within London you would like to travel for a fixed price. Even with 20% discount that you'll get with the student card, the price is still around 1200 £ where you are allowed to travel within 2 zones. In case you travel outside these zones, you'll need to pay the normal fee which is from 3.40 to 2.40 £ depending on how many zones you crossed.
I would really recommend to find an accommodation close to your university or campus you'll be in during your project as I did. In that way, you avoid travelling during weekdays since my accommodation was a 8 minutes walking distance from my campus.
It's possible to apply for a UK bank account without having an National Insurance number (NI), and they even gave us lots of information at King's. The requirment was to apply for a documment of proof that you'll be studying full time at a University in London. What I did is to open a bank account in TSB to be able to open a membership at a local gym. However, it is not necessary since if you're a student in Sweden, you could apply for a student bank account, wich would remove all fees and withdrawal costs within EU. And most gyms that require a monthly subscription can be payed in cash monthly. Some markets and off-licence stores will charge extra for payments with card under 10 £. Therefore, one should have som cash to avoid these extra charges.
Food and beverage is a bit cheaper compared to the standard prices in Sweden. Alcohol in stores and pubs/clubs is significantly cheaper as well.
Boende
Accommodation seems to be the biggest issue in London from what I've heard. In case you don't apply for an accommodation through your University, expect to rent an accommodation for a higher price with a worse location. Most accommodations that don't belong to the Universities in London are in a bad state since the standard there is worse compared to the accommondations in Sweden. Landlords can expect you to pay a deposit for 2 months. I would also recommend to read reviews of the agency/landlord before paying for the deposit since scamming is a big issue in London. If you choose to live in central London (Zone 1-2), expect the rent to be at least 900-1200 £/month.
Studier allmänt
I did my degree project in London, therefore I was not involved with student activities and did not attend any courses.
My studies in London was a bit different since I had working hours, spending approximately 40/week in the lab was enough to read journals, do my lab work and to write the thesis. The group I was working with was great and very welcoming. I bumped into a lot of problems in the beginning, but due to the help I recieved from the group, especially from my supervisor, I was able to get in the right direction and master the techniques and get a deeper understanding.

It was a bit scary in the beginning since I was not quite sure what the project was mainly about, and what the goal of the project was. I was also not very independent when it came to lab work, and therefore I required a lot of help the first two weeks. I guess I was requiring a lot of the groups time even though they're busy with their one projects. But the more I worked and the more I read, the more independent I became. I spended 5-9 hours a day in the lab depending on what day since some days only required 1 hour lab work. It was also some misunderstanding since my supervisor thought that it was required for us to be there 8 hours/day, even though you only had 1 hour lab work. But the more he saw that I was independent and could plan my project alone, the more responsibilities he gave me.
I would recommend to read beforehand, and come prepared since it can save A LOT of time. Since 20 weeks is probably not enough, since the deeper you dig in the project, the more questions you find that you would like to study and answer. For instance, I calculated that I lost 1 month due to infections of cells, sparce cells and wrong treatments and etc, which gave me results that could not be used for my thesis.
Overall, the project was the most valuable experience during my 3 years of studies.
Språk och kultur
Since the spoken language in the UK is English, it's hard to experience difficulties with the language.
Some accents are thick, and therefore can be hard to understand. However, the accents is an experience as well, and you will find that London is a multicultural city with people coming from all over the world.
Fritid och sociala aktivteter
Since the project work took 5-9 hours a day, the rest of the day and the weekends were not occupied by studies since the time spent in the office/lab was most of the time enough. This allowed me to explore London, and hang out with people that I met in London. I do recommend to explore London since the city is huge, with different people, communities and atmosphere depending on where in London you were. However, I never left London since the ticket prices were high, so I never got the chance to explore close cities such as Birmingham or Brighton.
I joined a local gym where I met a lot of people which I spended a lot of time with during my stay.
I also joined an american fotball team through King's College student union, where I met a lot of people as well.
In my case, I moved to London all alone, and only had my uncle there. Therefore I had to search for opportunities where I could meet new people. My experience in London would not be the same if I had not taken these opportunities.
I spended 5 months in London, which is a long time to spend without knowing people.
Sammanfattning
The exchange was one of the best experience in my life. I would lie if I say that I wasnt afraid before my move and during the first days. But I took every opportunity to meet new people, since I was about to stay in London for 5 months.
King's College London is a prestigious university and the people that I worked with were amazing. I could imagine working in London in the future since there are far more opportunities within life science compared to Stockholm.
