Accommendation

My accommodation was arranged beforehand. The staff of the KI housing took care of everything. Upon my arrival the apartment and all its belongings were ready for me. The apartment was extremely comfortable, with kitchen, living room, private bathroom, everything you need to be very comfortable. The cost was covered directly from the scholarship money.

Language and Culture

This surprised me, that the vast majority of people speak English perfectly, both within the academy and outside of it. This allows for adequate communication and exchange of experiences. All people, physicians, students, professors, nurses were very kind with me. All in my presence they changed from Swedish to English, this made me feel very good.

Leisure time

I had the opportunity to walk, use public transport, and know a lot about Stockholm. Visit its museums, parks, this was very enriching.Being in Stockholm there are many things that are required to do as visiting the Vasa museum, or the ABBA museum.Walking through Gamla Stan is something that should be enjoyed. One can not help but try the Swedish-style meat balls and the tasty salmon.I love visit Uppsala, the museum and old medical faculty.https://www.visitstockholm.com/

Miscellaneous

I could recommend you to know the profile of the visiting professor, to find the best way to engage in the Swedish system.

Other activities

I had the opportunity to visit the hospitals and their facilities. I was able to see how the medical attention is given, how the patient's information is managed in the digital medical history and I knew a lot about the health system in Sweden. After my visit to KI we will be able to give more benefit to the visits of other professors as well as to the activities of the KI students that arrive in Ecuador.

Preparation

My university maintains an Arrangement with the Karolinska Institute, for the exchange of teachers and students. At the time my university, the University of Azuay, four students have gone and I was the second professor. We have already received two medical students from the Karolinska Institute. All this is thanks to the Linnaeus-Palme programme and grant. First, I send my CV and then I was selected for the Linnaeus-Palme programme, all of the time I have information and help from International Relations Unit from Karolinska Institutet. They sent me formal invitation letter and insurance certificate, so I was able to do the visa processing.

Reflections

The best thing about this exchange and the visit to Sweden was to get to know the first world up close. I make the organization, the way of life, everything around your society. The health system. The specialty in medical work, especially the structuring of work teams in specific areas, in the case of my visit, the great specialization in the surgical area by pathologies or by anatomical segments. This development also allows advances in research. The best: the great organization and the perfection of the health system within the hospitals. The worst: the lack of interest of the Swedish people to know the other realities, in my case, Ecuador in South America.

Teaching

I was able to attend several academic teaching activities. Master classes, workshops, case discussions, simulations. I think this experience was very good and enriching and it has given me a lot of peace since the methodology used is very similar to the one we use at my university. The simulation center left me surprised. Everything is so well organized and programmed so that the workshops and courses are very close to reality. I can attend an emergency room simulation course, where the knowledge and skills of the entire medical and nursing team were tested.

Teaching hours

During my stay I was able to share a large part of the surgery workshop: Outpatient clinic, excision of naevi (short presentation "prickmottagning" before meeting patients) "wound seminar " (with teachers from India) "Hernia seminar" (with teachers from India) Case seminar (the students prepare upper GI cases that we discuss) and minor exam "GI bleeding seminar" with gastroscopy simulation Suture and knot technique training with teachers from transplant unit Seminar "Dysphagia" and "Biliary tract seminar" Seminar "Acute abdomen" emergency casesAlso I have the opportunity to assist the "Innovation Day", the student present the investigation works and I can enjoy master class from professor who have activities with the student in differents areas of medical knowledge.
