Exchange report - incoming students
Home university: Albert Einstein College of Medicine
Study programme: Medicine
Exchange programme: INK
Semester: Spring semester 2011/2012

Arrival and registration

Arrival arrangements were sufficient.  I had a MRSA swab done at the health center without issue.

Acommendation

The housing was very reasonably priced, although somewhat small.  It was overall satisfactory.

Leisure time and social activities

I did not participate in KI organized social events.

Pre-departure

I wanted to experience a medical system that is different and superior in many aspects to the system we have in the United States.  I chose KI becuase of its reputation within Europe as an excellent academic institution.  There were not too many materials available at my school regarding KI, but the KI website was more than adequate for getting all the information I needed.  Paperwork was minimal.

Courses during the exchange period

2EE090 : Emergency Medicine
Well organized course, excellent simulation day. Very relevant lectures.
ELAXX6 : Surgery 1
More clinical than didactic. Could use more lectures. Overall, doctors friendly and eager to teach.

Summary

Overall, a very positive experience.  I would not change much about my experience there.

Language and Culture

Did not attend.

Studies in general

The Swedish study environment is very lenient toward adequate time for free study, especially on clinical rotations.  Teacher/student relations are very good and patients are very accepting of medical students as well.  Overall, a better learning environment than the US in clinical rotations.
