Semester: Spring semester 2012/2013

Arrival and registration

I took advantage of the global friends program to help coordinate my arrival to Stockholm. A KI student greeted me in the lobby of the central station and was extremely helpful in getting  me set up on the first day. We stopped by the SL center and I was sure to buy a month pass SL card. I  used the SL system numerous times a day and would highly recommend buying a month card for your exchange.

Acommendation

Unfortunately, the housing I requested through KI was not available for the first 2 days I was in Stockholm. I arrived the weekend before the beginning of my studies, but I did not have access to housing until the following Monday. There was a very narrow window of time when I was able to pick up my keys on the stated Monday, so be sure you are aware of those restrictions listed online and plan accordingly. I stayed at PAX, which is located in Solna very close to the Vastra Skogen train station. It was very convenient to be so close to a public transportation hub, The building is composed of dorm style single rooms with their own bathrooms, but a communal kitchen for each floor section. The housing worked well for the stay.

Leisure time and social activities

I participated in a couple of the global friends events during my stay. I would highly recommend taking part in these activities as they are a great, cheap way to explore Stockholm.

Pre-departure

I had never taken part in an exchange program before, so I was excited about the prospect of visiting somewhere new to study medicine. I was interested in KI as the hospital system is well known for it's excellence and the exchange program itself seemed really well organized. My home institution had never sent anyone to KI before, so I was excited for the adventure. The initial process for enrolling began about a year before the actual exchange and the information provided and and the website we're all very useful.

Courses during the exchange period

ELA005 : Internal Medicine 1
I studied at Danderyds Sjukhus and rotated on Intensive Cardiology, Elective Cardiology, Pulmonary and Acute Care wards. The coordinators were very helpful in arranging any clinical experience I was hoping to take part in. All of the staff was very friendly and welcoming. I was typically paired with a senior resident or fellow who was comfortable teaching in English. Outstanding teaching overall.

Summary

I was very pleased with my exchange at KI. I had a great clinical experience at Danderyds Sjukhus and had a lot of fun exploring the city of Stockholm. I do wish I had learned more Swedish before beginning my exchange, but merely for convince. I always felt very welcomed and had an outstanding time in Sweden.

Language and Culture

I did not participate in any Swedish Language course during my exchange given the shorter length of my stay. I do wish I did take part in some Swedish Language study before/during my rotation as it would of been very helpful for my visit.

Studies in general

I greatly enjoyed my clinical studies at KI. I was located at Danderyds Sjukhus for my month exchange in medicine and had the opportunity to rotate on a number of wards during that time. Everyone was very friendly and approachable. There is a very cooperative atmosphere between all the employees at the hospital and it made for a very welcoming stay. I worked directly primarily with senior residents or fellows and they we're outstanding at helping find learning opportunities for me. The coordinators were helpful in arranging any clinical environment I was interested in exploring.
