Accommendation

I had some problems with this.

I made a reservation at Jagargatan 20 on early november 2008 with the Univeristy Accommodation Centre and I got a confirmation by email of the reservation. Nevertheless,  for some reason that I never understood, this was not considered and on march 2009 I find I had no reservation. I contacted them again, but I didn`t have reply.

Finally, was the international coordinator who made arrengments for me at Liljeholmen, Nybohovsgrând 17, in an apartment of the Stockholm School of Economics.

The apartmet was very good, had all the basic things you need. Altough the cleaning was regular when I arrived.

About price, I got a lower price from the one at Jâgargatan.

I think the price is ok for the standars in Sweden, I might say.

The apartment is central, very near local transportation and has all the neccesary shops and facilities.

Language and Culture

The teaching was conducted in english.

As for all the participants, including teachers, english is a second language, is not so difficult to understand each other and all of us were very patient and made our best effort.

This time, I had the opportunity to understand better how OT is being developed in Sweden and beyond its frontiers too (Scandinavia; Africa). Understand the main challenges the profession confronts, which of this challenges are confronted in Chile too and which of them will be confronted by us in the future. Getting to know better these, allows us to be well prepared for the future, learning from others good and bad experiences.

We are looking onto your study plans, because most of the changes you have already made, we are starting to plan them in order to give better answers to the new student’s needs and the new challenges that my country is facing in health matters.

An example of this is the population ageing. People are getting old and they are having a longer expectative of life, but which quality of life might they have? This is a question that must concern all of us, but specially OT’s in Latin American countries because we have older people that are socially and economically vulnerable.

For you, I believe, it’s an opportunity to see how we do O.T in a developing country. Do we share the same challenges? Do we give similar answers to these challenges emerging from our practice?

Being at the O.T section at KI for 3 weeks, has provided me the opportunity to do a lot of things, because it is possible to share ways of working, ways of teaching, ways of thinking and, specially, ways of doing things and solving problems that are very useful for us.

I would like very much that all of us take advantage of this great opportunity this program gives to us. To become to know each other and to improve the way we are doing O.T around the world.

Leisure time

Yes, many activities were arranged and they allowed me to share with people from the courses. I must say I had great fun and felt very welcomed.

Also, the program allows you to have enough free time to make some walkings and little trips around that allows to know and enjoy the city very well.

Miscellaneous

An excellent opportunity. Allows to share, grow as a teacher, get a lot of new lernings, share systematic knowledge. Hope it could go on for longer.

Other activities

§         Discussions about research projects going on in the O.T section at K.I, and at O.T School in Chile, establishing some kind of future collaboration between both. This collaboration in projected as:

o       Training in Research Methods

o       Collaborative research with elder people

§         Discussion about my own research project as a PhD student in Public Health.

§         Participation in different academic activities at the section, so as to become more involved in the academic work that is being developed at KI: lectures; workshops; informal meetings and discussions with colleagues; between other activities

Preparation

The following is a final report about the teacher exchange program at Karolinska Institutet, Linneus-Palme Program.

It´s main purpose is to provide some basic information and grounds about the importance of this exchange program for both institutions.

Basic Information about the Exchange Program.

The following part of this report is about the importance of this exchange program, from the view of the O.T School.

The exchange program between O.T School of Chile University and Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, financed by the Linneus/Palme program, began in 2001 with the visit of some teachers from KI to our School in Chile. After this meeting, an agreement was established, that considered the exchange of students and teachers from both institutions once a year. Tecaher exchange

Teacher exchange. The teacher exchange program has, as a main goal, the exchange of knowledge and experiences, to help the O.T School at Chile University in the development of the curriculum.  For this purpose we wil have the visit of a KI-Professor next August to help as in this process.

It can also be seen as an intercultural and academic experience for the O.T program at the Karolinska Institutet.

As a professor that has taken part of this program twice, I strongly believe it is an excellent opportunity of enhancing our teaching programs for both.

The main goals of teacher exchange are:

  1. Exchange teaching experiences that are part of the O.T curriculum

  2. Exchange teaching methods

  3. For Chile: observe the application of different teaching programs designed from a country with a very different culture and development level.

I must say that from my particular point of view, the opportunity to have travelled more then once has allowed me to get involved in academic activities that know can be projected to a future, such as the CBR course. this could not have been possible if I only came once.

Students Exchange.

The students’ exchange is one part of their clinical practices, with the added component of doing this practice in a different and challenging cultural environment.

Main goals of the student exchange:

  1. Adopt a behavior according to professional demands

  2. Transfer concepts learned to real situations, by choosing and developing different kind of interventions

During 2009 two students from Chile will come to develop one of their clinical practices.

Reflections

My opinion is that doing some lectures with OT students that come from such a different reality from the one I work in Chile provides the opportunity to identify these differences, but also a lot of aspects and challenges we have in common, as members of a same profession.

I think that both, students and the professor gain a lot having the opportunity to confront these realities and discussing about which are the main challenges for OT in this different environments.

Final reflection

Finally, just a brief reflection about the importance I see in this exchange program:

I must say that I’m very pleased to have had a new opportunity to come to KI for a third time and be part of this exchange program. I really believe that this program offers a great opportunity for all of us, Chilean and Swedish colleagues.

This time, I had the opportunity to understand better how OT is being developed in Sweden and beyond its frontiers too (Scandinavia; Africa). Understand the main challenges the profession confronts, which of this challenges are confronted in Chile too and which of them will be confronted by us in the future. Thank you very much.

Teaching

Main activities 2009 during exchange visit.

  1. CBR Course

I had the opportunity to be part of the team of teachers that participated in this course. As part of my activities as a teacher in the course I:

- Assisted regularly to lectures 3 times a week (Monday, Wednesday and Fridays)

- Had lecture with the students about:

- Health System in Chile

- CBR in Chile: background and experiences

- Participated in the first oral examination of the course (Friday 15th of may)

- Participated in some teacher’s meetings in order to project this activity (Course of CBR) to the future.

I must say that the participation as teacher in the course was a wonderful experience. It allowed me to:

-          Learn about CBR and home based rehabilitation in different parts of the world (Africa, Scandinavia)

-          Share the experience we have in Chile about CBR.

-          Project a collaborative work between the institutions involved in the course in the near future.

-          Share an interdisciplinary work with professionals such as PT and nurses, a key for CBR.
