Arrival and registration

I was impressed of the warm welcome. They give you all the information you need, and are very helpful! It was easy tom make an appointment with the student health centre to take an MRSA- test. We were not included in the Global Friend maillist, event though we wrote down our mail address.

Acommendation

I applied for housing through UAC. It is very easy to apply online, and the let you know very fast if they have a room available for you. I stayed at Jägargatan, where you have your own room with a sink, and then your share toilet, shower and kitchen with 11 other people (in the same hallway). The rooms are cheap, so you cant expect that much. There are enough storing space, except in the kitchen, where you only have one shelf in the fridge and one small locker. There is a lot of mess and noise with so many people living together, but you get what you pay for and you make a lot of new friends.

Leisure time and social activities

I participated in the Amphiox and visited the MF- pub. I had no problems making friends, even though I did not participate in any of the social activities provided by Global Friends. You met a lot of people at the student housing, and since I was in a Swedish class, I made a lot of Swedish friends.

Pre-departure

Exchange is an amazing opportunity to discover medical studies at other Universities. I wanted to see how they run a medical school at a different university than my own. I had heard about KI, especially about their work in science. I wanted to discover a big city in Europa, in a country where I could understand the language. I was not given a lot of information about the University before I went there.  I had to search for the information on my own, and read old student reports. KI let you know if there are any places available at the courses, so you have to be prepared to decide and leave within short notice. After I knew that I was going to KI, I got a all the information I needed. I did not need any certificates or vaccines.

Courses during the exchange period

D9XX01 : Clinical Medicine- Neuro, Senses and Psyche
This course includes psychiatry, neurology, ear-nose-throat and opthalmology. In includes lectures, clinical rotations, seminars, taking own patients in the open patient clinic. They all finish with a theoretical and practical test. The courses are really good, and you get to see a lot of different patients and talk to your own patients. Your learn a lot at the seminars, where they teach you about the most important diagnoses and you can ask questions. This is very you will learn the most! When you are in the open patient clinic, the patients will not always show up, and sometimes you had to wait quite a while before anything happened. This time could have been used to do more useful things or see other patients with other doctors. (Most of) the lectures hold a high standard, and you will get a lot of feedback from your supervisors.

Summary

My exchange period was an experience I will remember for the rest of my life. You learn a lot, and make many new friends. it is very useful to have a E-tjänstkort, and we went through a lot to get those cards. KI could make it easier for exchange students to get that card so that they have access to the journal system.

Studies in general

The swedish study environment is very good. THe are good at taking breaks, and the level of the lectures is very high. You get in close contact with the supervisors, especially because you separate in smaller groups with a supervisor on the clinical work and seminars. You get to see a lot of patients during the courses. Not of all them are informed that there are students taking history. In comparison to my home university, KI focuses more on the clinical work as a doctor from a primary health perspective, and focuses more on clinical skills than theoretical details. They have long days, and it would be nice to have more time to study for yourself.
