Arrival and registration

SInce I was in Hong Kong I could not participate the introduction day.

But the pick-up service offered by KI was great. We were so sorry to Artemis who came all the way to T-centralen to pick us up in late Saturday night. She gave a lot of info to us on how to get to T-centralen from airport as well.

The screening for MRSA was very smooth as well. The nurse was so kind and helpful as well.

Acommendation

The housing system was satisfactory. We managed to apply our dormitory without much problem.
However, it would be better if the information is clearer on website.
Before I would have expected the dormitory to have wi-fi.
Not until I arrived there I realized there is only LAN. As I did not bring my laptop, I could not use internet in dormitory, which was quite troublesome in terms of studies.

Otherwise, the room was great and the price is so much cheaper than private housing i believe.

Leisure time and social activities

Sadly my floor in the dormitory did not hold much event, so I missed the chance to make friends with my neighbour. However, I did meet some good friends in other floors as my friend was living on another floor. We went to Uppsula for the festival together as well.

Pre-departure

I chose KI as my exchange destination is because of the good peer review from my seniors and co-years. Also Sweden is a place I have longed to go, hence KI made a lot of sense to be my exchange place.

To be honest, I did not have much information from my own university. However, I do get a lot of information from KI after i applied the exchange programme. Also Magdalena gave lots of help to me and my friend as we were pretty late for application.

However, since I was attached to the Emergency Medicien of Sodersjukhuset, I would like to receive the info earlier. I thought I would need to bring my own clothes during the attachment as this is the common practice in Hong Kong. But I realized this was different in Sweden when I received the info. If I could have the info earlier, maybe I could bring less clothes with me for the trip.

Nevertheless, overall it was great for the pre-departure part.

Courses during the exchange period

2EE090 : Emergency Medicine
Shadowing doctors in KI was so rewarding. I have never seen a culture that doctors like teaching that much. Back in Hong Kong, doctors hate teaching and believed it is a waste of time for themselves. I could sense a bit of selfishness from their act unless the doctors were really smart and good at teaching. Since I was in emergency medicine, I could not interact with patients much as doctors need to handle the patients very quickly and most of the patients do not speak English. However, doctors would try their best to explain the case again in English and the logic behind on what they were doing. So I still managed to learn during the attachment. I believe other students who were more experienced on on-hand skills managed to perform in real patients. Since I did not learn the skills back in Hong Kong, it was a pity that I could not practice much during my attachment. The system is very different from Hong Kong as well. Doctors were allowed to have more time to handle a case and hence building a closer relationship with patients is much easier than in Hong Kong. Also, patients could freely ask questions to doctors who were working in work-station, which was really shocking to me. In Hong Kong, you could never expect that to happen and even so, the doctors probably would not care or answer. In addition, the atmosphere is more chill and this could be due to less patients and more human resources. In summary, I would really prefer my practice in KI than in Hong Kong

Summary

The exchange programme is very rewarding itself. I got time to visit around Stockholm and learn the culture. Of course there were rooms for improvement such as earlier delivery of information from accommodation and course. However, the staff here in KI is so helpful that they helped to solve everything for us.

Sadly I could not speak Swedish, or else I would have get more from my attachment. Still this is one of the best experience I had in my life

Language and Culture

No I would really love to participate but the intensive class is only offered during weekend on certain dates. So I could not take part in that
