Arrival and registration

Our first day in Stockholm was a little hectic due to failure to communicate effectively with  the student pickup service
but we received immense help once we made it to our place of residence .
The introduction day was awesome, we really felt welcome at the campus in Flemingsberg
The students , the international co-ordinator ,  the tutors were all very helpful and kind .
The student nurse at the health centre was very kind and we were able to access the clinic whenever need arose

Acommendation

I applied for housing through the UAC (Ki housing to be specific)  and I and my colleague both got our first choice ,that was
Jagargatan 20 residence , quiet and calm place with a nice scenery .
There is a park and a lake right outside the residence.
It was also the more affordable place for us

Leisure time and social activities

We had a few dinners organized as Erasmus students ,which were a wonderful way to get to know each other out of class.
I and my colleague went on a boat cruise to Finland , it was lots of fun .It was our first cruise on such a big boat.
Also the hop on and off bus was  a great way to learn about the history of Stockholm and the different sites and museums

Pre-departure

I have always admired the Great Karolinska Institutet  and being given a once in a lifetime opportunity to attend the
exchange program as an Erasmus student was a dream come true for me.
Karolinska Institutet is currently the best Dental institute, as a matter of fact we were present for the cake cutting ceremony at the campus in flemingsberg when it was ranked the best dental university in the world.

We received adequate information regarding our stay in Sweden , there was good relay of information regarding
the study program prior to  our departure from Uganda. We were required to do a few tests ,most important was the MRSA test that was done at the Karolinska institutet university student clinic .We  were also vaccinated against hepatitis B and yellow fever prior to our departure from Uganda.

Courses during the exchange period

ETL002 : Child and Adolescent Dentistry - Odontology
I must say , I had a great experience at the pediatric clinic and orthodontic clinics most . The clinics were very organized ,the tutors were very kind and taking the extra mile to explain ow different cases are managed . We also had pre and post evaluation discussions before and after the clinic sessions . These were very informative
ETL001 : Comprehensive Care - with subject specific courses
We learnt a lot , however the major challenge we faced was language barrier as some of the classes were offered in Swedish only.
2EE075 : Comprehensive Care in Odontology
I had an amazing experience . We were introduced to advanced dentistry , we had a 2 week attendance of preclinic sessions in preparation for the prosthetics and endodontic clinics in preparation for clinic. In addition to these were introductory classes to the software systems used for recording patient information while in the clinic. We always received assistance from current students in getting our way around the clinic

Summary

I am and will be forever grateful for the opportunity to attend the exchange program at Karolinska Institutet.
I hope that that it will go on and even be accorded more time . The ten weeks I had while there were fast spent, I could have asked for more. I look forward to going back someday for a postgraduate program .

Language and Culture

I was unable to attend the Swedish language course but learnt a few Swedish words like " tack, hey, debras, etc"during my stay there

Studies in general

The Swedish study environment had a serene ,relaxed and more interactive aspect to it in comparison to my home university (Makerere University -Kampala Uganda). There is a good student -teacher relationship that promotes interactive learning.
Also the tutors are bent on ensuring that no one is left behind  no matter how long it may take a few to learn  ( they are very patient ) . I must say , none of my questions were ever left unanswered , I got to learn a lot from my rotations in dentistry
