Elective Clerkship - Anesthesia
Department of Anesthesia - Vanderbilt University Medical Center
Rounding
At the end of each day the operating schedule for the following day was posted on the intra-web, at which point I was assigned to an attending or an OR. The available information for each patient was then reviewed, first alone, then together with the responsible anethesiologist the following day, after which we introduced ourselves to the patient and discussed anything that might have come up, such as comorbidities, previous anestesia, dentures, medications, and finally a review of the airways was done to plan for management intraoperatively.
Procedures
Procedures included but were not limited to management of airways (preoxygenation, mask-ventilation, evaluating need for oral airways or nasal tube, direct laryngoscopy), induction, maintenance of and emergence from anesthesia (choice of method, drawing up and administration of drugs, management of vital parameters and patient pain, gasflows), monitoring of patient intraoperatively (EKG leads, aterial line, blod pressure cuff, pulsoxometri, kapnogram), respirator settings and fluid management.
Lectures and Conferences
Grand Rounds every Friday, dealing with a variety of subjects as well as morning lectures for residents were attended.

Elective Clerkship - Interventional Radiology (IR)
Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences - Vanderbilt University Medical Center
Rounding
Rounds started every morning at 8:00 am. Usually there were about 8 out-patients scheduled for procedures each day, and in addition there were in-patients that could be scheduled the same day. During rounds the patients are discussed and images were reviewed, and the operative procedure was planned out.
Procedures
A wide variety of procedures were daily performed under the guidance of fluoroscopy and ultrasound. Usual procedures were placement and removal of Port-A-Cath, nephrostomy tubes, transjugular liver biopsies, chemoembolizations etc. More uncommon procedures were PTC, TIPS, Uterine Artery Embolization, Subclavian stent etc. As a medical student I got to assist on a lot of different procedures, especially placement/removal of Ports where I got to do them by myself under direct supervision.
Lectures and Conferences
Every day there were noonconferences on different radiological subjects, including chest X-ray, IR, nuclear medicine, CT/MR, Neuroimaging etc. In addition, each Monday there was a trauma conference where video capture from trauma cases from the past week were shown, and the injuries shown on trauma CT were discussed and commented from a radiological standpoint.
Miscellaneous
Pre-operative assessment and collection of consents together with the resident.
In between procedures there were discussion and teaching with the different residents, fellows and attendings.
Attended every day from about 07:00 am - 4:30 pm
