Accommendation

I lived in Jägargatan 20, Stockholm. I like my accommodation very much. It was very convenient for me to go to work. It was also very convenient for me to cook and have a shower. The room service was also good. The price was also OK. I got lots of information from the links that Miss Maria Olsson gave me.

One thing I should mention, I felt a little bit cold during the night because the quilt was too thin and to short.

Language and Culture

I usually gave lessons in English. I spoke a few words in Chinese sometimes. Of course, no one can understand me. I did meet some language barriers. But the language barriers became less and less because I worked hard and I also got lots of help from teachers and students. I like Swedish culture very much. Such as clothing, customs and habits, foods. There are some differences, but there is no clashes. Swedes are so kind and nice.

Leisure time

There were many social activities arranged for me. Such as:

December 7, I listened to the Nobel lectures in Physiology or Medicine.

December 8, I visited Dottingholm and celebrated Saint Lucia's Day, accompanied by Maria Olsson and her family.

December 12, I attended the Swedish “ Christmas Table” organized by Surgical department.

December 13, I watched broadcast of ceremony of Saint Lucia's Day on web.

December 21, I visited City Hall and Vasa Museum, accompanied by Stephan Haas.

December 24, I attended the Swedish Christmas party,  accompanied by Eva Sandell.

I really enjoyed them. I should thank Swedish friends for their careful arrangement. I also get many useful links from Maria Olsson and Stephan Haas.

Miscellaneous

I like Stockholm, Sweden very much. I also like the teacher exchange very much. I got lots of knowledge and experiences in the past 26 days. I was given so much help, support and introduction from the professors, doctors, teachers, students and anonymous passerby. They are so kind, so nice. There are some difference in medical education between Sweden and China. But there is no difference in the goal of medical education. We all want to train high-quality medical talents. We all want to protect and save more patients. I will bring the experiences obtained from the teacher exchange to the medical education of China.

I suggest that the exchange program of students and teachers between Karolinska Institutet and Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine should be maintained and strengthened.

Preparation

I’m a surgeon and from Shanghai, China. I work in Ruijin Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine. Karolinska Institutet and Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine have had medical education cooperation for many years. We established a plan of teacher exchange in the early time of this year. Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine sent me to Karolinska Institutet to accomplish the plan. So the opportunity was given by Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine and Karolinska Institutet. I really cherish this opportunity.

Before I went to Karolinska Institutet. I prepared lots of material, such as: Lectures, medical cases, image data and PPTs and so on. I also took a long time to improve the language ability. I got lots of information of Karolinska Institutet and plan of Linnaeus-Palme. Miss Maria Olsson, the International Coordinator of exchange plan, gave me so much help. I got lots of information from the links that she sent me by E-mail.

Reflections

There are three aspects I was influenced by this teacher exchange. First, teachers here focused on the training of students’ team spirit. Secondly, teachers here focused on training of student’s many abilities apart from clinical ability. Thirdly, teachers here focused on training of student’s communication skills between doctor and patient. I will pay more attention to the training of student’s team spirit, practical abilities and communication skills after returning from Sweden.

Teaching

I attended some modalities of medical educations in Karolinska Institutet Huddinge. The form of education included seminar, symposium, conference, simulation training. I attended a form of clinical education combined with Surgery and radiologist and like the form very much. I didn’t see the medical student’s examination because there was no examination during Christmas. Some medical students told me that they will have some examinations on January.

I did find some differences between Karolinska Institutet and Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine. First, the teacher pay more attention to the training of students' practical ability. And the students also liked to talk and discuss with teachers and with each other. Secondly, the teacher pay more attention to the training of students' team spirit. I saw it during the simulation training and traumatic rescue training. Thirdly, the teacher also pay attention to the training of students' research ability apart from clinical ability. Fourthly, I felt the relation among the students, the teachers and patients are so good.

There are some advantages of the medical education in Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine. There are so many opportunities for them to improve the clinical abilities because the population of patients are huge. There are lots of PBL and CBL courses for training the abilities of conscious thoughts or decision-making. There are some simulation centers in Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine and two simulation centers in our hospital. They provide the changes for the medical students to improve their practical abilities also.
