Accommendation

Very nice appartment and located very conveniently near bus stop and shopping area within 15 minutes of walk.

Language and Culture

Teaching was mainly conducted in Swedish but for my benefit translations were made for important aspects. Swedish culture is very interesting, people are very cooperative and polite and despite the language barrier I did not experience any major cultural clashes. Only difficulty was with cellphones where all recorded messegaes and information was in Swedish and I found it hard to find the remaining balance or any other relevant information.

Leisure time

I was invited to a lunch on the 1st day of the rotation. I did get to see Stockholm by bus and on foot quite a lot. I loved Gamla Stan.

Miscellaneous

Sweden is expensive!

Other activities

I had a study visit to a school with school psychologist

I made research contacts with senior researchers at the departement of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Specially impressed by the work done in the area of childhood pscyhological trauma.

Preparation

I came to know about Linneaus Palme teacher excahnge program 2 years ago from our department chairman and I applied for it last year (2007). I prepared for the visit by staying in touch with the international coordinators at KI and the departmnet chairman at child and adolescent psychiatry, Karolinska Insititute.I prepered my material in english although the medium of instruction at KI is mainly Swedish.

Reflections

Departmnet of Barn och Ongdum Psykiatry has a strong teaching program and in the future I plan to incorporate many of its components in our program at AKU.

Teaching

Teaching in child and adolescent psychaitry is very well organized and covers all aspects fo child mental health suited to the needs of medical students.

Teaching hours

8 Hours per week of student teaching
